I’m Sterling, a technical product lead in Toronto. Some friends call me Joe (my middle name). I tend to get into whatever I’m exploring enough to build with it. Solving problems is something I enjoy, more so with other people.

Q: Are you available for hire?
A: Please see my LinkedIn for my status. If something here is worth continuing, email is best: me@sterlingfreeman.net (not for: product pitches and recruiter mailouts).

Autumn trail

Epistemology

How much of what you know survives when someone else, or an agent, picks it up? I’ve been asking some version of that since symbolic logic in undergrad, and thinking about how I think for longer than that.

Scale

Scale is the size of the work, the number of people doing it, and the number of people it affects. I’m interested in what breaks as each dimension grows.

Human Computer Interaction

HCI, because it shapes how we interact and communicate with each other and our surroundings. It also decides who gets to take part, and I’d like that to be more people, and now agents too.

Product Philosophy

I spend my focus on things I’d use myself, would hand to people I care about, and that leave people better off beyond the ones using it. Where I can, those efforts are free and open source.

The measure I use is what keeps going after I’ve moved on. The how gets handed over along with the what.
